Poison ivy relief

Posted Jul 24 2009 10:04pm

IMG_4162-1.JPG Ask me about poison ivy.

Its domination of one of my kids (who prefers to remain nameless) is finally drawing to an end.

Since it was on the neck and face - including eyelid - with major swelling and inflammation, a course of steroids (prednisone) was necessary - hard on kids because of accompanying hyperintensity of emotions and sleeplessness.

Even with steroids, though, it was not an overnight fix. It's taken a good two weeks to get back to normal.

For relief: freshly-made and appropriately cooled but still-warm oatmeal mixed with baking soda.

Our Poison Ivy victim also googled for less messy remedies and came up with one I hadn't heard of: rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana peel.
