First, I just wanted to mention that our yard is absolutely covered-- covered --with lightening bugs. And that's all I really have to say on the subject, I don't really have any light to shed on it (har.) other than wow! There are way more lightening bugs, birds (especially cardinals) and rabbits in our yard here in urban Maryland than I have ever seen in Vermont. Which is just weird.
And now, the can o' worms. Late today. At about 4pm. Alex got it into his head that he wanted to tear the rug out of Georgia's room.
OK. He actually had the idea a little early, but he got started on the task at almost 5pm.
I'll admit, it's not like he didn't get me to agree. But now I think we may have discovered just why that was the one room that the former homeowners kept carpeted when they pulled the rest of the rugs out a year or so ago. Water stains. Not a lot, just two. And one of them is even pretty small. But the other is RIGHT in front of the closet door, not in a place you can just throw a bed or rug over, and fairly large.
I am so bummed. I mean, it's not like the rest of our floors are in great condition, they all need to be refinished at some point and we do have water stains in the dining room as well. But this was just a real bummer to discover. Now what? It certainly ain't going to help re-sale if we don't fix it. (Not that we're going anywhere.)
We also figured out why they put cheap-o shoe molding in the rest of the house. When they pulled out the carpeting they found there is a gap (small, but there) between where the wood floor ends and the wall begins. So, it looks like we have to put some molding down in Georgia's room as well. And of course re-paint (because now the trim looks awful) and that dang water stain! Water staining is like the hardest thing to fix. And it's dark staining so if we refinish we'll have to go dark. Which actually, can look really good. But uh....who has the money for that? And I hear it's really toxic. And maybe I didn't mention it, but I'm pregnant. And it's the baby's room for goodness sake. The current baby.
Argh.
This is one of those things most people can probably just live with. But it's next to impossible for me. For me, it's one of those "But we just got her room set up and now all her stuff is in the other room and I don't even want to play in there with the floors all mucked up. Wah wah wah." And besides, that isn't even the project I WANTED to work on today. I WANTED to paint Sir Baby's room. But now HIS room is piled with Georgia's stuff (on top of all the stuff we already had to clear out of there.)
I mean. In actuality. If I could afford to fix the floors, like now, I'd be psyched. The rest of the floor looks great. And the carpet WAS over 10 years old and brown and drab and boring. And I think it was the culprit as to why the room always smelled so dusty and why it retained the smell of the diaper pail.
But. But. But.
Le sigh.
Looks like it's off to Home Depot again tomorrow. I'll post pictures if I think of it. And hey! Anyone know how to fix water stains cheap?
