It Never Ceases to Amaze Me!

Posted Dec 12 2008 3:50pm

Alex and I stopped into the store for some spirits on the way out of the co-op where I got a much-lusted-after ginger peach scone. At the store, I picked out a bottle of Pinot Grigio called Mommy's Time Out. This'll be the first wine I've had in 10+ months and while I was probably totally suckered by the name and the label (which features a chair facing the corner of the room) I am looking forward to it! Alex, as usual, got a couple bottles of some fancy ales.

Anyway, while there I noticed the front page of the paper which had the story we were wondering about. Turns out, yesterday while on the way home, Alex noticed several cops in bulletproof vests checking out the neighborhood and area woods and our physical therapists mentioned seeing lots of cop cars and cops with their guns drawn and while we were starting Georgia's session we heard the loud chucka chucka of a helicopter overhead to which we all agreed that we'd hear about it by morning.

However, before I could even begin reading what had happened the woman behind the counter at the liquor store proclaimed. "Ah, it was nothing. It was just a hoke."

A hoke??

"Ahhh. Really?" I said "Huh."

Leaving the store, I turned to Alex, "What did she say?" I asked him.

"I think she said a hoke."

So I asked the only logical question, "Is that, like, the singular of hoax? Just one. Not several. A hoke?"

To which Alex laughed and laughed...and I recalled for him (although judging by his prior knowledge of how my story ended, I guess he'd heard the story before) how when I was ten my friend Wendy spoke of her cloe. Her wha-?! Her cloe?? And when I asked her what she meant, she told me she was referring to her shirt. Her one shirt. Not clothes --that would be plural and she only had the one shirt. She simply meant her cloe. One shirt=one cloe. Two shirts=clothes.
