In January I made a committment to myself to get healthy and fit. I began the Cool RunningCouch-to-5K program and started working out diligently with the Wii Fit and then the My Fitness Coach programs. After the first workout of the Couch-to-5K program, I thought, "Okay, I can do this. I'm winded, but I'm okay." As I looked through the rest of the nine week program, I shook my head at week seven.
"Brisk 5-minute warmup walk, then jog 2.5 miles (or 25 minutes)"
What?? Me?? Yeah, right. Yet I trusted that the program worked; my daughter Mariko had given me the link and she said it really did work.
So I followed the program, which was less daunting when you read the article instead of just skipping to the workout table.
"It's easy to get impatient, and you may feel tempted to skip ahead in the program, but hold yourself back. Don't try to do more, even if you feel you can. If, on the other hand, you find the program too strenuous, just stretch it out. Don't feel pressured to continue faster than you're able. Repeat weeks if needed and move ahead only when you feel you're ready."
Once I completed the program in 9 weeks, I moved on to the 5K Training Schedule , although I got sidetracked in April when I sprained my ankle. I took one full day off from exercise, then taped my ankle well and modified my Fitness Coach workout to keep exercising without stressing my ankle. I was amping to run again, which I finally did again after fifteen days without. After a week or so back on my running program, I decided to sign up for the ADC's 3rd Annual 5K/1mile Race . ADC sponsored Rachel's second visit to Ghana last year. Unsure of how healed my ankle was, I signed up for the 1 mile race. A couple days before I flew out to Salt Lake City for the race, I changed to the 5K. I needed to prove to myself I could do this.
Every now and then, some of my online friends and I get together. Last year we did the ADC 1 mile race together, so we decided we could make a weekend of it again this year. This all coincided with my tattoo date, which I had set up months ago. One of my best friends, Aly, came along this year; we hadn't seen each other in 3 very long years. We had a comedy of errors just trying to meet up at the airport in Dallas, which we both Tweeted about, but all's well that ends well and we talked non-stop from the moment we embraced until well into the wee hours of the morning. On Friday we met up with our other friends for fun, food, and loads of laughter.
We were up bright and early the next morning for our race . How fitting was it that 'Defying Gravity' from Wicked was began playing on the loudspeakers as I crossed the finish line? Completely. That blew my mind. I was 5th in my age group; 82nd overall for women. Um, we also found out that somehow the measurement was off and we actually ran 4.1 miles rather than 3.1 miles. My time was 48:13.8~ and for someone who really only began to run in January, heck, I'm thrilled. The Couch-to-5K program really does work! My friend Cathy won her age group in the 1 mile and was 2nd overall for women in that. Whoo hoo! Go Cathy! (and thanks for the photos above)

Went for pedicures afterwards and that felt so great after my run! The rest of the day was a blast times a gazillion, and there was laughter well into the wee hours of the morning again. Sunday was a time for tearful hugs as most needed to go home. A few of us stayed behind and went bowling before my tattoo appointment.
