Feast of the North American Martyrs

Posted Sep 11 2008 8:09pm

Today is the feast of St. Isaac Jogues SJ, and companions, known as the North American Martyrs. I have visited their shrine in Auriesville, New York, on the Mohawk River.
It is an awe- inspiring pilgrimage to make as a family, to visit the spot where martyrs' blood was spilled as they boldly proclaimed the Gospel, well aware that they were putting their lives at risk. An old round shrine church, and an Indian museum are the highlights of the beautiful grounds. No remains of the priests who died there is interred at the spot, nor at the Shrine of KateriTekakwitha in nearby Fonda, NY on the other side of the Mohawk River, but your children will love the nearness to America's Native American, Catholic heritage.

Here's a post on the blog, " Good Jesuit Bad Jesuit" in honor of their feast day.
