Dream Big and Special K's - A Very Special Request

Posted Oct 04 2009 11:13pm

How surreal, I almost feel famous ... allowed to guest blog on My Special K's?! Renee and I (Carey from Dream Big ) found each other because unfortunately we both had girls battling childhood cancer. As awful and dreadful as cancer is, I feel blessed to have met so many new and wonderful friends. What an unbelievable support Renee has been for me as we waded through our daughters treatment and recovery. My daughter, Chelsea, was diagnosed at the end of Kennedy's treatment.

Chelsea during treatment:

Chelsea today:

We are now one year post treatment, (yipee!) and Renee and I are still in touch. The reason I am posting here today is because Renee and I would like to reach out to you, our faithful blog readers, to help us help another family who has a little girl with Down syndrome and leukemia. We were devastated to learn that our friend little Ashlyn is now fighting leukemia again. She was treated simultaneously with Chelsea for AML and now has been diagnosed with ALL.

This type of leukemia will have a much longer time line - two years at least. Ashlyn's family has been through this before, and survived. I have no doubt they will beat it once again. It doesn't seem fair that one little girl, one family should have to do this again. But cancer is never fair.

Over the next two years the McFadden family will make numerous trips to the Children's Hospital, over an hour away. We watched the gas prices rise while we were in the hospital a year ago to over $4/gallon, we know the toll expenses like these can have on a family with a sick child. Because Ashlyn's family will have to make so many more trips to the hospital in the coming years we wanted to step in and try to help alleviate some of the financial stress.

I am calling you, our blog readers for help. We ran a very successful fundraiser before Chelsea's last round of chemo that allowed my husband to take a week off of work and stay in the hospital with Chelsea and me. Again I want to run a mascara fundraiser with your help. The best part is almost EVERY WOMAN wears mascara!!! I know we all buy different brands, from drug stores to department stores, but I'm asking you to purchase your next mascara from me! As a Mary Kay consultant I am able to donate my profits straight to this family. For each mascara purchased $5 will go to the McFadden family to help offset the costs they will be enduring over the next two years. I have included a button at the top on the right side of the blog that will remain there for you to purchase your mascara. You can also purchase today right here:

Want to do something more? Write about the McFadden family on your blog and link to this page so your friends and family can help support Ashlyn! (Don't forget to leave a comment here so I can read your post!) Don't have a blog? That's okay, send an email to your friends and family and ask them to consider helping. You know women right? And do they wear mascara? ... I thought so!

10 mascaras = $50 - I'm sure they would be ever so grateful, but could you imagine ... 100 mascaras = $500!!! How exciting would that be?!!! Let's make this happen friends. Fundraiser runs through July 15, all mascara will be shipped between July 15-July 30. Get your orders in now!

Thank you Special K Readers!!!
