8:00—Registration 9:00—Welcome 9:10—Basic Overview of DS-ASD Drs. Darlene Kardatzke and Maria Stanley (Developmental Pediatrics, Riley Hospital for Children) Learn about how an ASD diagnosis is made in children already diagnosed with Down syndrome. This presentation will include information on why it is important to get an ASD diagnosis if it is appropriate for your child as well as a basic overview of treatment options.
10:45—Practical Solutions: Behavioral Strategies in DS-ASD Dr. Naomi Swiezy and Stacie Pozdol, MS (Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center, Riley Hospital for Children) All children exhibit negative behaviors at times, this presentation will help parents better understand the reasons why their children may do so. It will also provide an overview of effective proactive and reductive behavioral strategies for individuals diagnosed with DS-ASD.
12:15—Lunch and Resource Fair During lunch, a variety of local resources will be represented at tables throughout the conference venue. Conference attendees will be able to use this time to talk with other parents, and also to speak with representatives from local agencies. Parents will have a unique opportunity to learn about those supports that will best meet the needs of their child.
1:45—Communication in DS-ASD- Speaker to be announced The focus of this presentation will be on the various strategies and supports available to establish functional communication in children with DS-ASD. The language needs of this population are unique, and thus it is important to best understand how to create and support functional communication.
3:15—Panel Discussion of DS-ASD This discussion will include individuals from a variety of perspectives, including a parent of a child with an ASD, an educator, a speech pathologist, and occupational therapist, a psychiatrist, a behavioral specialist, and a social worker. Conference attendees will be able to pose questions to the panel and learn from this diverse field of experts!
