A Thought in the Middle of the Night

Posted Aug 26 2008 4:33pm

We've been scratching our heads trying to figure out how to comfort Kellen when he obsesses over a scary movie. We've tried taking the movie away. We've told him that the movie is just "pretend". We tell him that Mom and Dad will protect him and that he is safe. Nothing seems to help but just waiting him out. Sometimes this takes days. He is afraid to go to bed and when we do finally get him to bed, he wants his dad to stay with him.

While we were on vacation he hardly talked about scary movies at all. He and his dad shared a bedroom and he slept well. Last night, in the middle of the night, Kellen put his hand on his dad's chest and whispered in his ear, "You are safe ".

Maybe it's starting to sink in.
