Your feet were made for walking and thus just because you have a colitis diagnosis should not be an excuse for not exercising regularly espcially during periods of remission.
For all the excercises for colitis that can be undertaken, why should you look at walking. There are some very good reasons for this.
Walking is an excellent way for your whole body to undertake an easy, basic and natural movement. The greater proportion of time you spend that your body is not moving, there is a greater risk of it not functioning at its optimum level.
Here is a little test…compare how you feel when you have had a period of time, days even up to a week when you have had no exercise. Yes, it is easily done wth everything else that needs to be taken care of. Okay, what about the week which has included several good walks, maybe playing some sport?
What is the difference? You feel so much better both physically and mentally, don’t you? There is none of that feeling of sluggishness, you have the feeling of being awake and “buzzing”. The key aspect here is that healthy exercise such as walking will contribute to the overall health of your organs, including your bowel.
So what does walking bring to the party?
* Gets your heart pumping and deeper breathing which aids blood circulation.
* Increases enymes which aid digestion
* Improved healthy appetite and deeper sleep
* Muscle tone and strength enhancement
* And a big one here in realtion to colitis…walking uses up energy converted from food.
Think about it. If you burn off more of the food due to your need for energy, this obviously leaves less food that is not converted into energy…and less for the bowel to deal with. And those with colitis, don’t you think that would be beneficial?
And a word about breathing again. I discussed in another blog post, walking stimulates breathing, not just any type but deep breathing which in turn can be used as a relaxation method.
So, try to undertake a brisk walk everyday, followed by relaxed deep breathing as you wind down from your walk. This will facilitate you resting the mind, destressing…all very good for building up the defences against colitis symptoms. It will certainly improves your health and wellbeing and could contribute to your defence against colitis symptoms.
