When considering a suitable diet for colitis you should not ignore the choices you make for what you drink which are just as important to the decisions you make as to what to eat.
Yet there is a drink that you should not only ensure it is a central part of your colitis diet, it is most likely that you must adopt a higher level of consumption of it than you are taking at present. So drink more! That is right but before you crack open a bottle of bubbly I have new for you.
It is water that you should be drinking and lots of it. One of the biggest problems with people’s health generally is the low amount of water drunk each day. I am absolutley amazed when someone who feels thirsty reaches for a can of fizzy drink or a power drink or a so called “healthy” drink. The vast majority of people are in living in a dehydrated state yet they do not know it.
Which triggers a feeling that these people then try to sort by eating! The digestive system requires a sufficient amount of water to aid such digestion yet with this lack of water consumption, is made worse by drinking synthetic rubbish…no wonder so many more people are complaining of gut problems.
You need to constantly replenish the water that already exists in your body. But how much should you drink? I have read anything up to eight pints per day but I would rather go with the simple philosophy of drink water when you first feel thirst come on and especially after undertaking any form of exercise, no matter how slight. How about adopting a regime of small but often water drinking rather than gulping down a pint or two in one go?
So hwo do you drink water? Well… don’t gulp it down in huge quantities. Drink it throughout the day slowly and steadily and try and not drink it is it is really cold.
By ensuring you are drinking an adequate amount of water, your digestive system will have sufficient water to undertake its job properly. It is very important that toxins are flushed out of the body, especially for those with colitis. And if colitis symtpoms are active, it is very important to replenish the body’s store of water and you will be surprised how much is being lost with having to go to the toilet on a regular basis with bloody diarrheoa.
