Met up with some friends for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory tonight. My “go to” meal there is usually their Tuna Tataki Salad which I know is pretty much SCD safe - “ Pacific Albacore Tuna Lightly Seared and Served Rare with Avocado, Tomato and Mixed Greens Tossed with Wasabi Vinaigrette “. It’s a nice light dish and I always feel good after eating that meal.
Today, however, I was in the mood for something more substantial. I carefully surveyed their huge menu and finally settled on the Charbroiled Flat Iron Steak - “ Flavorful Flat Iron Steak, Topped with Steak Butter. Served with French Fries and Crispy Onion Strings “. Of course, the fries and crispy onion strings are not SCD compliant so I asked the waitress if I could switch out the Fries for a side of Green Beans instead. She said that would not be a problem. I was served the most delicious thick and juicy steak with a side of green beans and watercress. I don’t know if it normally comes with watercress or if they took it upon themselves to switch out the crispy onion strings for the watercress thinking that maybe I’m a low carb customer. But it worked out really well and I was perfectly happy with my SCD compliant meal.
Since everyone was ordering sweet teas and soft drinks, my beverage of choice was a tall glass of seltzer with a twist of lemon. My friends all decided on a communal appetizer of nachos topped with cheese, guacamole, salsa, sour cream, and spicy chicken for the table. Since I know that’s not allowed on the SCD, I slowly picked at a few pieces of that, just so it wouldn’t raise any concern among my friends that I wasn’t enjoying myself or being anti-social. I’ve found that if you keep the conversation really active and lively during the appetizers no one ever notices that you’re not really eating them. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I find it much easier just to have a few bites of something that I know won’t affect me badly than to make an announcement about how I’m on a special diet, and can’t eat this and that, blah, blah, blah. I only see these friends once every few months, it’s not like we’re dining together every day.
Of course, when you eat at the Cheesecake Factory, how can you not order cheesecake for dessert? Luckily, we’re always so full from the meal since they give you such huge portions, that we always order just one slice for the table and then share it. Two tiny forkfuls of their light and creamy Vanilla Bean cheesecake and a decaf coffee and I was set. Very weak coffee is allowed occasionally on the SCD.
I’m happy to say that right now I feel really good. My tummy is very comfy. Hopefully I will feel this good tomorrow also.
