Radish With Shell

Posted Mar 18 2010 1:40pm

radish-with-shell

I bought a beautiful bunch of organic radishes with the greens attached at Whole Foods last week. As I popped the red radishes off to clean, and then eat them, I noticed this one had a tiny shell impaled on it’s root. Isn’t that strange? I just had to take a picture of it and share it. I’ve never seen this before. Of course, right away, it made me wonder how the shell got there. Was the shell in the soil that the radish was grown in? What kind of soil has tiny shells in it? Are radishes grown near the ocean? How did the shell not fall off through this radish’s journey from farm to store to me? Perhaps the shell was from a tiny snail. Was the radish grown in soil with these little snails it in? It looks like the root grew right through the abandoned snail shell.
