prolonged use of stool softener

I have been using stool softener for a very long time.  Not sure of length. I had a lot of constipation problems in the past.  I even had a fisher which I had operated on several years ago.  Ever since I have been taking one stool softener a night, I have not had a problem.  Health wise, will this affect my health or is it safe to use one per night?
