Is it possible for a child to have Hirschsprung's Disease along with Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

Posted by Catrina Johnson

My son was born with congenital aganglionic megacolon, also known as Hirschsprung's Disease. He has had corrective surgery to have that part of the colon removed. He now only has 10 inches of his colon left, but keeps getting what I would call "stomach virus episodes" every few weeks. Could this be Inflammatory Bowel Disease? I do know that it is not a stomach virus because he is the only one in our family that gets sick. I have researched IBD and noticed that IBD causes flare ups of these symptoms which is why I was wondering if its possible that this exists with Hirschsprung's Disease or if these symptoms are just signs of infection due to over growth of bacteria in the colon since it is shorter after a pull-thru operation.
