i have a tear in my lower stomach muscle and a resulting hematoma. what should i do?

i went to the emergency room last night because the pain was so sever and getting worse.  a cat scan revealed a 3 x 6 ml tear with a pretty large hematoma.  i have had the flu and a sinus infection and it seems the caughing has caused this.  it is extremely painful.  the doctor suggested ice packs.  how long will this last and what should i do or not be doing?  linda
