Giant Strawberries

strawberries
You can’t really tell how big they are from this photo, so here’s another…

strawberry-on-hand
Giant strawberry in my hand. My hand is about 7″ from the base of my palm to the tip of my middle finger. Although this photo makes my fingers look weird. So here’s another one…

strawberry-ruler A giant strawberry next to a ruler. The fruit itself is a little more than 3″ long. Never in my life have I purchased strawberries this large. I didn’t realize they were this large when I bought them. It was a huge container on sale at Trader Joe’s, so I just checked to see if they were in good condition and not squashed or moldy. It wasn’t until I got home and later went to eat some that I realized they were gigantic.

I don’t like giant fruit. Abnormally large fruit always reminds me of that Gilligan’s Island episode where they find a crate of radioactive seeds and all of the vegetables that they grow are enormous. It’s scares me. It’s not natural. Strawberries should not be this big!

But I’ve been eating them. And I have to say that they’re actually quite good. They actually taste like strawberries. Alot of fruit that is bred for size has no flavor. These do. Then, of course, I had to go to the grower’s website to see if they were GMO or anything like that. California Giant is the company. Their website is at www.calgiant.com . According to the website, they’re not GMO. “California Giant does not use GMO”s. California Giant has an on-going proprietary breeding program that continues to strive for the strongest, healthiest, most desirable fruit in each of our growing districts. For our customer, this means continued enhancement of our berries’ flavor, size, condition and color.” So that’s a little reassuring.

I’ve been mostly eating them plain on their own or cut up into pieces over plain yogurt as a snack, or a dessert. I came across a recipe on their website for a Creamy Dip for strawberries. It looked alright, and since I had the ingredients on hand, I thought I would give it a try. I adjusted it a little for the SCD and wow, it was better than expected!

And now here’s that Gilligan’s Island episode - Pass The Vegetables Please -
