Firecracker Etiquette

Posted Jun 15 2009 6:30pm

Growing up in Ct. our 4th of July celebrations were very, very, tame. Nothing was allowed. Not firecrackers, or sparklers or anything. Nothing. Had to go see the state or organization sponsored firework shows if you wanted pretty colors and big bangs to soup up your Independence Day. Now, I'm not complaining, just explaining. I totally understand why fireworks should not be allowed to just everybody. They are dangerous and in the wrong hands you can lose an eye with those things, or a hand or even your grandmother's best rosebush. Be very, very, careful with those big round cherry bomb things. Not that I would have had anything to do with illegal fireworks in my innocent youth. It was my cousin who did the bad things. Always my cousin. Never me. Unless my cousin wasn't around. Then it was my invisible, evil twin doing the bad things. But that's another story.
We live in Nebraska now and EVERYTHING is legal. Well, not everything, I just mean fireworks wise. You should see the things they are selling in those little roadside tents. They are selling fireworks as big as drums! I was totally beside myself with glee.
You see, I love explosions and pretty colors. But, I hate crowds.
Now I can do all of this stuff in my driveway. This is great!!!! I am also learning the proper ettiquette for a misfired missile. The neighbors are setting off bottle rockets for their grandchildren and when one made a graceful and lazy arc into our front lawn (the bottle rocket not the grandchildren) and gave off a pathetic little bang the nice lady waved and said contritely, "Oh, sorry." I, being a properly raised Yankee, waved back and said, "No, problem." Of course, since I am a properly raised Yankee the response would have been the same if she had blown up my cat.
But still, it's all very polite and well managed.
Scott just left to go get more fireworks. We are out of control with this thing. Years and years of latent explosion denial has risen to the top of our psyches and we want more, more, MORE.
