Castillo D Clavijo Rioja Tempranillo

I met someone from Spain last week who was going on and on and on about how great Spanish red wines are and how all he drinks are Spanish Riojas. So the other day, when I wanted to pick up a bottle of red wine to use in some recipes I was making, and wandered over to the Spanish wine section of the local store. I surveyed the selections and narrowed it down to a few that were in my price range ($12.99 or below). From there I looked at the inventory levels, and this one only had 2 or 3 bottles left on the shelf so I figured it was a good one.

I am once again happy to say that this method of selection never fails me. This is a very nice smooth drinking red with hints of dark cherries, vanilla, and the slightest tinge of oak. It was very gentle on the palate and just screamed out to be paired with slivers of a sharp hard cheese. Since I had some on had, paper thin slices of Romano did the trick, but a good cheddar would have been even better. One of the small joys of the SCD diet is a nice dry wine paired with a fine cheese.
