Smokers could be protected from lung cancer by taking a drug used by diabetics.
Phillip Dennis, of the US National Cancer Institute, said: "This drug was able to stop tobacco carcinogen-induced lung tumours."
That drug is METFORMIN and lower rates of smoking-related cancers have already been shown in other studies involving METFORMIN-treated diabetics.
Studies in mice exposed to tobacco carcinogens show a 50% reduction in cancers when the drug is given by mouth and 72% less with injection.
