Vitamin D deficiency may increase heart disease risk in Type 2 diabetics by promoting the formation offoam cells, one of the earliest markers of atherosclerosis.
“For many years we have known the associations and correlations that exist between vitamin D deficiency and CVD, but we have now found the potential mechanisms by which vitamin D prevents atherosclerosis,” Carlos Bernal-Mizrachi, MD, assistant professor of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Lipid Research at Washington University, told Endocrine Today.
