Nicotine Worsens Insulin Resistance -- May Lead To Prediabetes Or Worsening Of Established Diabetes

It's hard to find anything positive about smoking.
Further evidence is presented that nicotine in cigarette smoke may promote insulin resistance that accelerates movement toward a prediabetic state or a worsening of established diabetes.
However, this impact can be blunted, at least in rodents to date, by giving a drug called mecamylamine. This information has been presented to the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society currently being held in Washington, D.C.
