Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that recent studies suggesting possible cancer risk with LANTUS may not hold up under close scrutiny.
"Inconsistencies in findings within and across individual studies raise concerns as to whether an association between the use of (Lantus) and cancer truly exists."
I'll bet Sanofi-Aventis wishes it could get back all the time, and funds, it has spent defending this situation in the past few days.I know we wish we had all the time back we had to spend on the telephone trying to allay the fears of more than 30 patients that called in the past 2 days.
It appears someone likely made a lot of money in the market ... and others not privy to "the leak" lost out during this unfortunate situation (I'm in neither group). There was the initially reported vague comments stated to occur during the DeFronzo conference call on June 11th to the public announcement of the potential cancer link a couple of weeks later. These "media attacks" (my words) must be thoroughly investigated or they will continue to occur. It was a shame to see, at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Diabetes Association earlier this month, how much timewas devoted to attempts to "un-do" the Nissen-related damage to AVANDIA in 2007.
