A Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health report suggests a 74% increase in Type 2 diabetes in the UK between 1997 and 2003.
Lead author Ms. Elvira Massó González, said: "Our results suggest that, although the incidence of diabetes remains lower in the UK than in the USA or Canada, it appears to be increasing at a faster pace."
Douglas Smallwood, Chief Executive of leading health charity Diabetes UK, said: "This research is a sad indictment of the current state of the UK's health. Sadly, the statistics are not surprising as we know that the soaring rates of Type 2 diabetes are strongly linked to the country's expanding waistline.
Smallwood wants to put restrictions on "junk food advertising" and to institute mandatory food labeling.
