And apparently New Mexico Diabet...

And apparently New Mexico Diabetes Day too.

I’ve been thinking about this for a couple days and I haven’t been able to decide what to write about. I feel like the world’s worst diabetic right now. We have ALL the advantages short of a cure….and what do I do? We have meters and test strips are easily available. We have medications our grandparents didn’t even dream about. We have pumps and pens and a much better understanding of what we need to do to control the disease. Science says that diabetic amputations are a thing of the past - we have the technology to prevent them. We have laser treatments and about a bazillion books and plans to help us cope. We have transplants and the very real possibility of a cure.

Diabetes isn’t fun no matter what form you have or where you live, how much money you make or how good a support system you have. But I look around the world at how so many people are struggling to cope with diabetes without adequate testing or medication or with no real food choices or even clean water - and I think how much I am throwing away by not taking better care of myself.

I remember a Designing Women episode from years ago. Delta Burke’s character was introduced to a little boy from Africa whose family had died of starvation. She said something on the order of how she had been all wrapped up in worrying about having too much to eat while his people were starving. And the little boy said that she was beautiful.

Just for today I am going to be aware of all the wonderful advantages I have. Diabetes is not so bad to live with as it could be.
