I have been on citalopram for around 5 years now and have not had a problem drinking alcohol at any point of taking it. I must point out I am not a heavy drinker and my drinking is perhaps a bottle of wine once a week or fortnight, and on my night's out I have got pretty drunk and the citalopram hasn't affected it. But that is only MY experience and the patient information leaflets and doctors will say to avoid alcohol when taking citalopram. The way I found out was starting off with just a glass of wine and gradually worked my way up to being able to have 3 or 4 glasses. I sound like I'm advocating the use of alcohol here and I'm not; what works for me might not work for you and vice versa. If you're happy to not drink any alcohol at all then that might be the best idea for you, but if you do still want the occasional drink personally I've had no bad side effects from it.
