Permanent Link: Study: Green Space Helps Reduce Depression and Anxiety

Posted Oct 19 2009 12:00am

greensMy sister and I were driving back from a little weekend trip we took yesterday. It was as if we were driving through a road that had parted a large forest. We were surrounded by trees almost the entire ride back. I kind of wished we were going through there a few weeks later when the leaves surely would have shown its fall color spectrum.

Perhaps this exposure to all this greenery was a good thing for me. According to a research published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health: Green Space Helps Reduce Depression and Anxiety, it was found that the “annual rates of 15 of 24 different disease clusters, categorized as cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, mental ill health, respiratory disease, neurological disease, digestive disease, and miscellaneous complaints were significantly lower among those living close to more extensive areas of green space.” The authors don’t know exactly why this may be, but it sure sounds good.
