Permanent Link: Bipolar Diagnosis In Youth Rapidly Climbing/ If Bipolar Is Over-diagnosed, What Are The Actual Diagnoses?

Posted Aug 08 2009 12:00am

Though this article was published two years ago, rate Of Bipolar Diagnosis In Youth has been Rapidly Climbing , according to research funded in part by NIH. In fact, the diagnosis of BPD in children and adolescents has increased by 40 times over the last decade.

On a similar note, I found an article published more recently, addressing: If Bipolar Disorder Is Over-diagnosed, What Are The Actual Diagnoses? The piece summarizes a study published last month in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, which revealed that “fewer than half the patients previously diagnosed with bipolar disorder received an actual diagnosis of bipolar disorder after using a comprehensive, psychiatric diagnostic interview tool –the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID). One quarter of the patients over-diagnosed with bipolar disorder met DSM-IV criteria for borderline personality disorder.” The authors of the studies believe the over-diagnosis can lead to serious problems caused by the unnecessary mood stabilizers.
