Ever noticed how funny the way we talk about security these days is?
Things have security, we’re assured. According to advertising we can protect ourselves with locks and keys and passwords. Plenty of those. And pins, and maths, and data walled up our insides, lining our lives. Do you feel protected yet?
Because security is everywhere apparently. It’s in information flow, borders, the side of the rail road track you’re on, your mobile phone or remembering to close the gate. There’s an awful lot of containment in all that but I’m not so sure about protection.
Starting to think we can’t source security outside ourselves. Safety… erm, what’s that?
It’s a feeling, right? A notion, a moment, a cog of the heart. So does a sense of constant wariness add or detract from your awareness of danger/safety?
And how do you hold onto peace, anyway…I mean, isn’t that like asking a cloud to sit down beside you for a cup of tea?
Safety happens in the mind and/or the spirit. You settle into it when you’re simply here, hanging around. Maybe it’ll wait for you. On the other hand maybe we’re better off finding it in the present.
Better not to mistake our hopes and longings given form for something more than representation. If you try to lash safety to your mast then it disappears because you never really had it in the first place. Things change, move, grow and security is not a rock, let alone a lock.
It’s a work in progress, an end game for the Universe. It’s the calm that runs our storms, and there always will be storms. We need them, too.
