Everyone has a belly button.

Posted Jan 14 2009 4:48pm
Everyone.
Have you ever really thought about that?
Have you ever been with a person - anyone - and thought about their belly button?
It gives a surprising human-ness to the relationship or conversation.
See, at the base, we are all human. We all had a mother. We all were connected to her when we began our lives. We shared her blood, her nutrients. Through our umbilical cord, our belly button. It is the seat of our life, our human-ness, our very beginning. The mother, whoever she may or may not be, having afforded us the ultimate of gifts: herself.
We are them, we are these women, at least, that's how we began. And who would have known who we would become once let go, once severed from the body that sustained us until we could sustain ourselves.
Everyone started that way. We are all human. Everyone has one...
George Bush has a belly button. Mother Teresa had a belly button. So does the homeless man at the mall and the woman who abused you in a fit of road rage. I have a belly button. So do you.
Next time you are with someone, especially someone you don't like or agree with - think about it. Then think about your own belly button.
It's interesting. It can change your perspective.
I feel like it brings me back to my basic human roots. We are alive. We all came from the same place. We are all people. Rather than searching the heavens, and people's souls, think about the body, come back down to earth for a little while.
Try it.

It really is quite strange......

xXx
