Depression Treatment – Don’t Go It Alone!

By: Phil Hollemam

I have become somewhat of a student of the condition known as major or clinical depression . I’m not an expert, in the true sense of the word, because I haven’t had any formal training in the area. As I have mentioned before, I am an “expert” at having been depressed.

As an”expert”, I  understand the value of receiving the best medical care for depression we can find. However, you may find you can’t do that by yourself.

When I was at my lowest point, I was so desperate for relief I accepted whatever was thrown at me. I needed help,  but because I was afraid of what other people think, I was basically alone when it came to my care. That was a huge mistake.

Since I was so depressed, I really needed someone who would be a true confidant when it came to making choices in my treatment for depression. I needed someone who wouldn’t judge me and who wasn’t afraid to ask the difficult questions. Questions like: Why?, What are the possible side effects?, What are the options?, Are there alternative treatments available?

I needed someone who would say, You need to get a second opinion, Phil? Let’s see who we can find so we can weigh all of the information and come to an informed opinion about the best treatment for your depression.

You see, I wasn’t a very informed patient. I didn’t know then what I know now. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t care about knowing, because I felt terrible. I didn’t feel like doing research on depression treatment, I didn’t feel like asking a bunch of questions. I just wanted to curl up in bed with the covers over my head.

I felt like I had to have all of the answers. Men are supposed to have an answer for everything. We don’t need help.

That’s a bunch of horse manure. No one can have all of the answers. We can find someone we trust, confide in him or her, and say we need you help. We can tell that person we’re in no condition to make sound choices by ourselves.

The key is to find someone who is really on our side . We don’t need someone who is going to give us a bunch of crap. We need someone who will stand up for us, but will get in our faces when necessary. That’s part of a truly effective support system.

Keep looking. There are folks who love us and will do whatever it takes to help us find the care we need.

Yours in good health,
