Coming and Going

Posted Aug 29 2009 10:03pm

gertie Our dog Gertie, a 14+ year old Australian Shepherd, died in her sleep last night. She had started to have problems since Marley was put down last month. This last week she quickly went downhill. It was difficult for her to support her weight with her back legs and she stopped eating. We were going to have her put down this morning . . .

One of my favorite poems comes from Zen Seung Sahn ~ Although it refers to humans, I think you can substitute all of life. We all come and go.

The Human Route

Coming empty-handed, going empty-handed — that is human.
When you are born, where do you come from?
When you die, where do you go?
Life is like a floating cloud which appears.
Death is like a floating cloud which disappears.
The floating cloud itself originally does not exist.
Life and death, coming and going, are also like this.
But there is one thing which always remains clear.
It is pure and clear, not depending on life and death.
What is that one pure and clear thing?
