‘Smile and the world smiles with you. Cry and you’re on your own’

I read a quote today ‘Smile and the world smiles with you. Cry and you’re on your own’ and it really upset me (excuse the pun).
It’s true that tears of unhappiness leave you feeling alone and lonely. Depression feeds on this, taunting “you are alone, nobody cares, nobody loves you…” And when you’re all cried out you feel empty and ‘on your own’. That is depression winning.
This week I’ve cried more than I have in a long time. I can feel myself slipping back, and it scares me. ‘Cry and you’re on your own’ – I felt that.
I was never really alone; family, friends and doctors were a phone call away. I couldn’t make that phone call. Almost 10 years and I still cannot ask for help when I really need it. This terrifies me.
They should extend the quote to read ‘cry and your true friends will notice’. My friends and family are true saviors and have picked me up with kind words, hugs and shoulders to cry on.
Thank you, you have helped me more than you’ll ever know.
