In these modern times, there is a plethora of options for making your smile as perfect as you want it to be. Perhaps one of the most common issues that people seek to fix is the discoloration that can affect teeth for a number of reasons. Before you apply whitening agents to your teeth, however, try these tooth whitening home remedies, brought to you by your Silicon Valley dentist Dr. Randall LaFrom .
Strawberries contain an enzyme called malic acid, which is also found in some whitening toothpastes. You can cut the fruit in half and rub it over the surfaces of your teeth. Leave the juice on your teeth for a minute before rinsing it off with water. For added cleaning and whitening power, mash the strawberry to a pulp and blend with baking soda. Apply the mixture to your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush, let stand for 3-5 minutes, and thoroughly brush your teeth with toothpaste to remove the mixture. Dental floss will remove any seeds or debris that sticks between your teeth.
Crunchy fruits and vegetables, like apples, celery, and carrots, have high water contents. Eating them stimulates saliva production, which strengthens your body’s natural tooth cleaning process. The rough, fiber-rich texture of these foods also works as tiny toothbrushes that scrub plaque from the surface of your teeth.
Citrus fruits also stimulate saliva production. Lemons (when used twice a week) are especially useful for whitening teeth . In much the same way as lemons can lighten your hair, rinsing your mouth with a half-water, half-lemon juice mix can brighten your teeth. Be careful not to repeat this process more than twice a week, or the acidity of the lemon juice can deteriorate your tooth enamel potentially exposing the darker dentin underneath.
The benefit of using baking soda for oral hygiene is two-fold. Sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, is a natural neutralizing agent. It counteracts the acid in your mouth to prevent it from eating away enamel and allowing tooth decay. The abrasiveness of the compound also makes it adept at scrubbing plaque and stains from your tooth’s surface. Most toothpastes already contain baking soda, but you can also sprinkle some onto your toothbrush for extra protection.
If your teeth are severely discolored, then home remedies may not suffice to noticeably brighten your smile.
