The Ride Of Your Life

Posted Jun 13 2009 12:17am
"Real, constructive mental power lies in the creative thought that shapes your destiny, and your hour-by-hour mental conduct produces power for change in your life. Develop a train of thought on which to ride. The nobility of your life as well as your happiness depends upon the direction in which that train of thought is going."
Laurence J. Peter

What will this new day bring?  How much control do you have over it?  Here is the answer:  Live consciously, control your actions and reactions, and this new day may be the beginning of a better life, a better job or a better practice for you.  You may figuratively leave the old life, job or practice behind, but you will literally be living differently in the same place.
Our destiny is not just something that is the result of what happens to us.  Our destiny is waiting to be created by us.  Every minute of our future is like a block of clay; unformed until we touch it and shape it as we will.  Just as our thoughts and ideas cause our hands to shape clay into either a deformed mess or a beautiful sculpture, our thoughts cause our actions to make the days of our lives a disappointing rut or an exciting adventure.
We are not helpless.  Even in the face of tragedy, we have choices.  We even know it at the time, but sometimes we don't have the strength to keep standing.  Even if we collapse, we still have the next choice available that can begin to heal.
We are not helpless in our practices or workplaces either.  A dentist has every new day available to begin to build the practice of his dreams.  An assistant or hygienist can decide today is the day she will treat each patient as the unique and important individual that they are, and she can decide to do it again tomorrow.  A receptionist can decide that today she will look at the problem of filling broken appointments and come up with some solutions that will help the practice stay strong.  Together the team can decide that they will put their personal issues aside and make service to their patients their focus.
Decide which direction your train will run and then ask your staff to jump on with you.  Today can be the beginning of the ride of your life, or you can stay just as you are. It's the choice that's available to you every day.
