Oral-B Stages: Childhood Oral Health Initiative

Posted Apr 09 2009 6:10pm

The State of Tooth Decay

If I asked you what the number one chronic childhood disease is, what would you say? Asthma? Diabetes? Heart murmur? Sleep disorders? Hay fever? No. The correct answer is - tooth decay. In fact, tooth decay in children is five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever ( http://www.ada.org/public/manage/you/working_access_fact.pdf ).

Our junk food culture, coupled with holidays that glorify sugar-filled candy(ie. Easter & Halloween) certainly contribute to the high incidence rate of childhood tooth decay. However, the public’s general lack of childhood oral care know-how is also to blame. Outside of the dentist’s office, where can you find preventative oral care advice geared towards children? The internet? Sure, but there is a relatively small number of reputable health information sites online, and even then the majority of the population can not identify them. School? Fat chance. Friends? Probably not. So, where should a person look for credible childhood oral care information?

Enter Oral-B Stages.

Oral-B Stages is a new childhood oral care initiative by Oral-B that:

…seeks to teach parents how to properly care for their child’s teeth right from the start, and ensure a lifetime of healthy, happy smiles( oralb.com ).

The Stages

What’s unique about Oral-B Stages - just as the name implies - is its staging system. The stages are broken down according to a child’s age. The stages are as follows:

  • 4 to 24 months
  • 2 to 4 years
  • 5 to 7 years
  • 8+ years

For each stage, Oral-B has incorporated years of research into a number of helpful recommendations for optimally caring for your children’s teeth. For example, in stage 1(4 to 24 months), Oral-B recommends that you begin brushing your child’s teeth as soon as the first tooth comes in. At stage 2(2 to 4 years), it is recommended that you watch your children while they brush your teeth so you can help when their dexterity is limited - and so on.

Oral-B Stages Products

Beyond providing helpful information, Oral-B has also developed a dedicated product line for the Oral-B Stages initiative. These products are specifically designed to accommodate the unique needs of children in each stage. This includes special soft bristles, ergonomically-tailored handles, and age-appropriate themes. Your Thoughts

Has your family tried Oral-B stages products? Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Please share.

However, the general public’s lack of oral care know-how is also to blame. I’m willing to bet that over 50% of the population can not tell me how often they should brush their teeth each day. That should be a simple question, right? However, to many people it is not. Why? Because this sort of fundamental oral care knowledge is simply not taught outside of the dentist’s office - and most people don’t know
