New Stop Smoking Aid Also Whitens Teeth

Posted Dec 12 2008 1:26pm

New Tooth Whitening Smoking Cessation Aid

All of you smokers out there listen up. No, I’m not going to lecture you. You already know that smoking is horrible for your health. But, if you’re serious about quitting and are considering using gum to do it, then you’ll want to pay attention. Nicorette®, one of the more popular stop smoking gums has developed a product called White Ice Mint, which purports to be the first stop smoking aid to have the ability to whiten teeth.

According to the makers of this product, GlaxoSmithKline:

A new survey found half (49 percent) of smokers surveyed say the yellowing of their teeth strongly contributes to their decision to quit smoking.(2) Further, younger smokers (68 percent) under the age of 35 are especially concerned about the effects of smoking on their teeth, and more of them (82 percent) want to quit smoking because of it.(2)

What’s also significant to me from the study was the finding that 72% of those surveyed believed that the added tooth whitening benefit was enough to encourage them to try the gum and quit for good.(2)

I don’t know about you, but I think Nicorette® is on to something here. Clearly plain ol’ stop smoking gums are not compelling the masses to quit smoking. So, Nicorette® took it one step further with the whitening agents. While a great idea, I find it funny personally that smokers are apparently concerned about their appearance with regard to these tooth whitening benefits, but they’re fully aware of the disastrous health effects of smoking. Ironic?
