Welcome to my blog about oral health. What an incredible opportunity it is for me to begin blogging in May, which is Osteoporosis Prevention and Awareness Month. Osteoporosis affects almost all women after menopause.
A little know fact is that osteoporosis is connected to periodontal disease, which can lead to bone loss and tooth loss. Osteoporosis, also know as porous bone, increases the risk of hip, spine, and wrist fractures. Bone loss is associated with both osteoporosis and periodontal disease (gum disease).
Research shows that women with osteoporosis are susceptible to periodontal disease, eroding jawbones and tooth loss, and are more likely to have dentures by the age of 60. The severity of osteoporosis has been connected to tooth loss in postmenopausal women.
