my husband lets our 2 and 5 year old grandkids use his Closys toothpaste and swallow it. Is this safe?

He uses more than a pea-size blob on their toothbrushes.  The two year old basically sucks it off the brush.  I'm concerned for their health, not to mention forming bad brushing habits.

Swallowing toothpaste is usually not a good idea. Some toothpastes contain sodium fluoride and triclosan which are both very toxic in large amounts. Young children should avoid swallowing large amounts of toothpaste for this reason since it could lead to a very stressful doctor's visit. Their small bodies are much more affected by the ingestion of these chemicals than the average adult.
