Loose Dentures & Missing Teeth-Common Problems

Posted Sep 07 2008 8:14pm

Every day we see patients from Glen Ellyn, Lombard, Wheaton, and the surrounding Chicago suburbs with similar denture and missing teeth problems. Common problems are:

  • When people experience embarrassment or self-consciousness while smiling or speaking due to the movement of their dentures, their levels of self-esteem are lowered and they begin to change the way they act or think about themselves.
  • Denture wearers will change the way they smile or avoid smiling all together.
  • People hold their hands over their mouth for fear of someone seeing their missing teeth or concern that their dentures will fly out.
  • Wrinkles and looking old. Have you ever seen an elderly person who has few or no teeth? You will notice their face sags and becomes somewhat "hollow" looking. This loss of muscle tone and shrinking jawbone causes the skin to drop and sag, leaving you looking like a shriveled dried out apple.
  • Wobbly dentures – When teeth are missing, the jaw bone is permanently lost. The dentures rely on that bone to support it. As every year passes, that bone gets smaller and smaller. Then the denture gets looser and looser to the point where it can’t stay in.
  • Relying on dental adhesives -These are a messy and compromised means to hold the denture to the gums. They just don’t have the power to hold a denture at the same strength as bone holds the teeth.

There are of course several solution. See our website and photo Gallery at SmileGlenEllyn.com for more information! Also check our Patient Feedback for patient's comments and New Patient Information!
