Diabetes Risk with Gum Disease, Bone Loss with Implants & Other News of Note

Study Finds Over 90% of People with Gum Disease Are at Risk for Diabetes (PhysOrg)

The study, led by Dr. Shiela Strauss, Associate Professor of Nursing and Co-Director of the Statistics and Data Management Core for NYU’s Colleges of Dentistry and Nursing, examined data from 2,923 adult participants in the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey who had not been diagnosed with diabetes. The survey, conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States.

Using guidelines established by the American Diabetes Association, Dr. Strauss determined that 93 percent of subjects who had periodontal disease, compared to 63 percent of those without the disease, were considered to be at high risk for diabetes and should be screened for diabetes…More

1 in 4 Patients Have Lost Bone around Their Implants (Eureka Alert)

Bone loss around dental implants is far more common than previously realised, reveals a thesis from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Around a quarter of patients loose some degree of supporting bone around their implants.

The study analysed X-rays of over 600 patients. The more implants a patient had in the jaw, the more common it was to find loss of supporting bone. Just over a quarter – 28 per cent – of patients had lost some degree of supporting bone around their implants.

“Contrary to what we had previously assumed, the bone loss in these patients was not linear, but instead accelerated with time,” says consultant dental surgeon Christer Fransson, who wrote the thesis…More

Thyme Oil Can Inhibit COX-2 and Suppress Inflammation (ScienceDaily)

For those who do not drink, researchers have found that six essential oils – from thyme, clove, rose, eucalyptus, fennel and bergamot – can suppress the inflammatory COX-2 enzyme, in a manner similar to resveratrol, the chemical linked with the health benefits of red wine. They also identified that the chemical carvacrol was primarily responsible for this suppressive activity.

These findings, appearing in the January issue of Journal of Lipid Research, provide more understanding of the health benefits of many botanical oils and provide a new avenue for anti-inflammatory drugs…More

Brain Benefit for Seniors Who Volunteer (Futurity)

Older adults who tutored children or took part in some other form of volunteer service were able to delay or even reverse declining brain function, a new study finds.

Using magnetic resonance imaging, researchers at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University found that older adults who participated in a youth mentoring program made gains in key brain regions that support cognitive abilities important to planning and organizing one’s daily life…More

Time Watching TV Linked to Greater Risk of Death (Wall Street Journal)

In a provocative look at the impact of sedentary behavior on health, a new study links time watching television to an increased risk of death. One of the most surprising findings is that it isn’t just couch potatoes who were affected – even for people who exercised regularly, the risk of death went up the longer they were in front of the TV. The problem was the prolonged periods of time spent sitting still.

Australian researchers who tracked 8,800 people for an average of six years found that those who said they watched TV for more than four hours a day were 46% more likely to die of any cause and 80% more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than people who reported spending less than two hours a day in front of the tube…More

Scientists Link Plastics Chemical to Health Risks (ABC News)

Exposure to a chemical found in plastic containers is linked to heart disease, scientists said on Wednesday, confirming earlier findings and adding to pressure to ban its use in bottles and food packaging.

David Melzer, professor of epidemiology and public health at the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, England, who led the study, said the research confirmed earlier findings of a link between BPA and heart problems.

The analysis also confirmed that BPA plays a role in diabetes and some forms of liver disease, said Melzer’s team, who studied data on 1,493 people aged 18 to 74…More

Study Proves 3 Monsanto Corn Varieties Noxiousness to the Organism (Le Monde/ truthout)

A study published in the International Journal of Biological Sciences demonstrates the toxicity of three genetically modified corn varieties from the American seed company Monsanto, the Committee for Independent Research and Information on Genetic Engineering (Criigen, based in Caen), which participated in that study, announced Friday, December 11.

“For the first time in the world, we’ve proven that GMO are neither sufficiently healthy nor proper to be commercialized. [...] Each time, for all three GMOs, the kidneys and liver, which are the main organs that react to a chemical food poisoning, had problems,” indicated Gilles-Eric Séralini, an expert member of the Commission for Biotechnology Reevaluation, created by the EU in 2008…More

Broke a Tooth? Grow Another! (PhysOrg)

To all those who have made deals with the tooth fairy in the past: you probably sold your teeth below their fair value.

Dr. George Huang, Chair of Endodontics at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM), says those baby teeth and extracted third molars we are throwing away hold valuable dental stem cells.

“Our team found for the first team that we can reprogram dental stem cells into human embryonic-like cells called induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, which may be an unlimited source of cells for tissue regeneration,” Dr. Huang says…More
