Glen Ellyn (DuPage county) dentist reports that the American Dental Association (Oct, 2007) just released results from an astonishing study that found people with no teeth or very few teeth had a higher rate of dementia in a report conducted through the National Institute of Health.* This study is the first of its kind to shed some light onto a troublesome disease affecting today’s aging population. At this point it is unclear what the exact link is. Based on their findings, some possible theories were suggested. One was the impact and damage from gum disease resulting in tooth loss and it’s affects on the brain. The link between gum disease and increased heart problems and stroke has been well documented in the health field so we know this is a dramatic problem. The body suffers damage from the long term exposure to the bacteria that cause gum disease and can cause tooth loss. When the teeth are lost, the damage the gum disease created doesn’t go away. The body has been permanently weakened. Another possible cause of the link was the mouth’s helplessness to properly chew food for optimal nutrition. You see, the body runs similar to a car and need proper fuel to give best results. If the car is unable to properly process the fuel due age, wear or damage, then engine trouble can occur. Same with humans, if we can’t eat all the foods we need for a balanced diet and good nutrition like hard, raw vegetables or nuts, our bodies also suffer.
