Dealing with a Dental Emergency in Cupertino

Posted Jul 19 2013 3:28pm

tooth emergency with stethoscope The basis for the most effective dental care regimens is adequate prevention. For instance, brushing and flossing your teeth, as well as regular dental checkups and cleanings, are aimed at preventing dental diseases before they damage your teeth and gums. Unfortunately, accidents happen, and by definition are often difficult to prevent (except in hindsight). Luckily, your Cupertino dentist , Dr. Randall LaFrom, has extensive experience caring for our patients’ smiles, and can help save yours in the face of a dental emergency.

What’s Your Emergency?

Cracked, fractured, and broken teeth often warn you of their emergency with varying degrees of discomfort (depending on the severity of the damage). If one or more pieces break off, collect them if possible. Rinse your mouth and the pieces with warm water to clear away any debris, and call our office as soon as possible. Place an ice-pack or cold compress to the area to reduce any swelling that may occur.

Old or faulty dental work, such as a dental filling, isn’t typically an emergency. However, a jagged edge can endanger your tooth or surrounding oral tissues, and the failed filling can expose your tooth’s interior and cause it to ache. An over-the-counter pain medicine may help you find temporary relief, but you should visit your Cupertino dentist as soon as possible for a new, more effective dental filling .

A knocked-out tooth can often be replaced and saved if you take action immediately. Collect and rinse the tooth carefully, handling only the crown and taking care not to touch the tooth’s delicate roots and tissues. Try placing the tooth back in its socket and visit our office immediately. If the tooth doesn’t fit in its previous place, don’t force it. Place it in a small container of milk and bring it with you.
