Creepy-Cool Image: A Child’s Skull with 2 Sets of Teeth

Posted Sep 12 2011 10:01am

Ever wonder why you have two sets of teeth in your lifetime?

The simple answer: When you’re an infant, your jaw is too small to hold the full set of adult teeth. “Baby teeth” (also known as “milk,” “primary” or “deciduous” teeth) serve as placeholders of a sort, guiding proper development of the oral cavity. Once jaw, skull and surrounding structures are large enough, your permanent teeth emerge, pushing out the primary teeth.

You can get a sense of this process from a remarkable image of a child’s skull we ran across on BuzzFeed the other day. Creepy? Sure. But also kind of cool, seeing teeth from both sets at the same time…
