Can Periodontal Disease be Transmitted?

Posted Sep 11 2008 8:00pm

Recent studies at Ohio State University have shown that periodontal (gum) disease can be spread from one family member to another. Spouses were four times more likely to be infected as spouses of noninfected persons. Children of infected parents also had a higher rate of infection.
