Bone Grafting Cracked?

Posted by Rebecca L.

I recently had bone grafting surgery in preparation for implants. I've been in a great deal of pain which is to be expected, but, have been able to manage with multiple pain killers. I forgot the rules and ate something hard on the opposite side of my mouth yesterday, and felt what seemed like cracking around the surgical site. My question is, can you crack bone grafting material. If you do crack it, is it possible for it to 'heal' itself?

Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

In general, if there are no complications, bone grafts will heal.  Your "cracking" represents a complication. You should inform your surgeon of the events and have the surgery site re-examined to rule out further "complications".
