Beware of Brushing Too Vigorously-Gum Recession, Sensitivity

Posted Sep 29 2008 1:04am

A common problem we see daily is people that brush too vigorously or improperly, damaging the teeth and gums.  They literally “brush” the gums right off the root surface. Once the root surfaces are exposed they may become sensitive, are more apt to stain, and are more prone to decay.  For many people, brushing becomes a harmful activity.  The gums recede, roots become sensitive, and then to avoid sensitivity the area is not brushed resulting in decay or gum disease.
Prevention is the key to this problem.  The staff, upon examination, will instruct on the proper brushing technique, inform you about less abrasive toothpastes, share information about desensitization alternatives, and any other possible care.
