Be Nice to Sedation Patients--They Remember!

Posted Sep 29 2008 1:04am

Cambridge University researchers have found that the brain responds to speech when under sedation.  The scientists found using brain imaging that the brain processes the speech, but probably does not comprehend or remember the speech.  Other research has shown that even few patients have any memory of what was said by the doctor or assistants; they may have a remembrance of the emotional aspects of the conversation.  If for instance negative thing were said about the patient, the patient responded upon wakening with a negative feeling about the doctors and their experience.

Which is why—at Dr. Gibbs’s Smile Glen Ellyn office—we are always extra nice and say good things even to our sedated patients!
