Are porcelain veneers suitable for me?

Posted Aug 22 2010 7:17am

Porcelain veneer is a form of cosmetic treatment for your teeth. There are many reasons why your dentist probably recommend you to have porcelain veneers.

You see, before you embark on a full mouth makeover or just a single tooth treatment, you need to be educated on why you require veneer compared with other cosmetic options like whitening or braces.

Veneers are commonly indicated if you have multiple old tooth coloured ( white ) fillings on your front teeth. Very often, these yellow stained fillings make your teeth look old and neglected. Besides replacing these composite fillings on a periodic basis, doing a porcelain veneer is a viable option that can freshen up your look.

Very discoloured brown or yellow teeth caused by tetracyline stain usually respond poorly to teeth whitening. If you have tetracycline stained teeth, you are a good candidate for veneers.

Next, porcelain veneer can also be considered for slightly crooked teeth or teeth with gaps. For such cases, you have the option of braces, crowns or veneer. Braces might involve teeth extraction and take 1 to 2 or more years to complete. Crown or veneer option is more “instant” if you do not the luxury of time on your side. However, you need to know that crown/veneer treatment involve some removal of teeth structure and this is not reversible.

By the way, please inform your dentist if you grind your teeth. Veneers may not be suitable for you. Alternatively, you may require night guard to protect your existing veneers.

The above list of reasons for doing veneer is not meant to be exhaustive. Veneers, if indicated correctly, can be one of the greatest investment on your teeth.  :)
