Acid Reflux in Infant

Posted Jun 12 2011 7:10pm
Dear Dr. Ellie:

I've got a 4 month old cousin with bad acid reflux; they're planning on doing surgery at 6 months. I'm assuming xylitol is perfectly safe for all ages; would a solution of xylitol and water given regularly help alleviate and eventually clear up this problem? I hate the thought of her having sugery!

Dear S
Xylitol is certainly safe for HUMANS of all ages.

For a 4 month old we would usually suggest an 1/8th of a teaspoon into a 4 oz bottle of milk or water - whatever the child is drinking.

If the child is breast fed - and not on a bottle - I would wipe the mouth with a solution of xylitol as much as possible .

We have used this approach for babies with thrush or yeast infections.

This child is very young - I would like to know more.

I am not able to diagnose - but I would want to know why this child has acid reflux and how they know?

Second opinions are useful sometimes.

I hope this information is of some use to you.

Good luck,

Ellie
