Now, not all habits are dangerous. While habits can be healthy and helpful, they can also become stumbling blocks when we are unable to escape them.
I am reminded of this frequently in tap classes. Habits are one of the chief reasons students have difficulty learning new combinations. I’m sure we have all been there at one time or another!
Some one is teaching you a combination but you can’t get it because, out of habit, you keep doing a “heel drop” after the shuffle. No matter how much you tell yourself that there is no heel drop, your body keeps making the same mistake over and over again.
This is the hidden danger of habits. In tap and in life, habits can rob us of the ability to respond to what is happening in the moment.
